Biography
Sandro Del Rosario's films and installations are inspired by places, feelings and memories of feelings, distilled through a labor intensive animation process that transforms still images, photos, paintings and collages in moving, imaginary spaces.
Born in Italy, with a background as a multi media designer, Del Rosario came to the U.S. with a Fulbright Scholarship in 1998. He received an MFA in Experimental Animation from the California Institute of the Arts.
His work has been awarded and exhibited in many festivals and venues worldwide, including at the Annecy Film Festival, the London Film Festival, the Berlinale Talent Campus, the MoMa, the Lincoln Center and the Hong Kong Film Festival.
Over the past twenty years Del Rosario has been a fellow in residence with his work at a number of prestigious foundations in Europe and in the U.S, at the Bogliasco Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Santa Fe Art Institute among the others.
Currently Assistant Professor of Animation at Arizona State University, in Tempe, Arizona, Del Rosario previously worked as Art Director in Los Angeles, and traveled extensively as a Visiting Artist and Visiting Assistant Professor at non-profit foundations and universities across the United States.
Artist Statement
I collect, dismantle and assemble images in lyrical pieces that frame memories of places and feelings in imaginary spaces. Each piece follows the urgency of my emotions as they act as passionate footprints of a non-linear story teller. In my work I am longing for depth, poetry, and the ultimate blending of sound and images.
Animation is my favorite way to experiment with generating continuity from discontinuity, motion from stillness, and vibrant spaces from flat images, reinventing and expanding the experience of classical cinema.
